Lauren Gustin’s record-setting rebounding leads BYU WBB to 4th-straight win
Nani Falatea scored nine of her 16 points to go along with five rebounds and five assists in the first quarter, and Lauren Gustin added 21 points to go along with a career-high 24 rebounds and two blocked shots for her 15th double-double in 16 games in a 63-49 win Saturday afternoon over San Diego at the Marriott Center in Provo.
Ari Mackey-Williams added 9 points and 2 assists for the Cougars, who overcame 19 turnovers with a 40-23 rebounding edge and holding the Toreros to 38% shooting en route to their fourth-straight win.
BYU jumped out to an 18-7 lead after the first quarter and led by as much as 15 in the second half.
“I think we’ve gotten in a rhythm with each other, and I’ve gotten in a rhythm with them,” BYU coach Amber Whiting said. “Obviously, it’s going to take time with an ew coach. But they are starting to jell at the right time, and they’re playing their role.
“They’re figuring each other out, and they’re coming together. I couldn’t be more proud of them.”
Gustin’s 24 boards ties a Marriott Center record, the most in a single game since Tina Gunn-Robinson pulled down as many in 1978.
